Heater Maintenance Tips for Better Operation

Most of the homeowners that we partner with for HVAC service agree that they want their heaters to work as well as possible. Aside from scheduling professional service, there are a few care tips you can take into consideration to help your heater work at its best.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about heater maintenance in the winter season. Then give our team a call when you’re ready to schedule your annual heating maintenance service appointment.

Air Filter Selection

Your first step is to choose an air filter that meets the needs of your heater. This means choosing a filter that is a perfect fit for the intake grate without being too big or too small. You also want to pay attention to the MERV ratings on air filters and choose one that will clean your indoor air without blocking airflow.

We typically recommend an air filter with a MERV rating somewhere between eight and 13. Having the right air filter in place protects your heater from harmful particles that can create a buildup inside of the system and interfere with operation.

Air Filter Care

It’s equally important to change your air filter out in a timely manner. Whether your filter is rated to last one month or three months, it’s important to change it out on time before it gets too full. Otherwise, dust and dirt may begin seeping through the filter and getting into your heater. These tiny particles can get in between intricate gears and dry up lubrication that helps your system to operate effectively.

Thermostat Settings

You can also take care of your heater by using reasonable thermostat settings. If you set the temperature too high, your heating system won’t be able to keep up with heating your home effectively. This will add a lot of strain to the unit. Instead, set your thermostat no higher than around 68° for heating. This ensures that your system can heat your home adequately without taking on extra wear and tear thanks to strain from working harder.

Cleaning the Cabinet

It is inevitable that some dust will settle onto the heating cabinet. Once a month, you can turn your heater off completely and give it time to cool down. Then you can wipe down the outside of the cabinet. We don’t recommend opening the furnace up since that can be a safety concern. Our team can be the one to maintain and clean the inside of your furnace.

Vacuum and Dust

You probably think of vacuuming and dusting as household chores. However, these chores are also benefiting your heater. When there is less dust and dirt in your home to begin with, there is less that can get into the air and into your heating system.

This can help your heater work a little more efficiently and also reduce the chances of needing to schedule any type of professional service aside from regular heating maintenance in Winder.
