Lack of Heat
If your water is not getting as hot as you would like for it to be during a shower, then it may be time for a new water heater. Whether your model is gas or electric, the elements creating heat may be aging and wearing out. It’s also possible that mineral buildup from hard water is blocking your heating element from being able to increase the temperature of water enough.
Ideally your water heater should not be set higher than 120°F. You may be tempted to turn up the temperature as a way of boosting heat, but we recommend against this. Instead, your water heater needs to be flushed out to see if that helps. If not, it may be time for a total replacement.
Inconsistent Temperatures
If you are taking a shower, then the water should remain a consistent temperature until hot water runs out because of the tank supply. If the water seems to fluctuate between being hotter and cooler without you making adjustments to the faucet, your water heater may be to blame. Your water heater is designed to push tap water entering the tank down through the dip tube to the bottom to be heated up.
This ensures that the water coming through your shower is consistently hot. A malfunctioning dip tube can sometimes be fixed, but there’s also a chance that your water heater simply needs to be replaced if it is already older.
Water heaters can last for anywhere between 8 and 15 years depending on how well they are cared for and whether they are gas or electric. Keep in mind that maintaining your water heater through consistent professional care every year we go a long way toward helping it last longer.
Changes in Water Pressure
If it seems like water pressure goes down the hotter that you turn your faucet, there may be an issue with the water coming from your water heater. Of course, it is important to consider that if you have lower water pressure overall it is probably something else wrong.
However, noticing a significant difference between the pressure of cold water versus hot water, usually points toward water heater issues specifically. Just like the other concerns we listed above, our team can check out your system to see if it can be repaired, and if not we can make recommendations for installing a replacement.
